Back To Main Menu. NEW YORK - Last night at Webster Hall, Rilo Kiley fans sang along to the band's new material, old material, and everything in between. If some of them felt betrayed by the once-indie pop-rock band, which has signed with a major label, Warner Bros., they didn't show it.Jenny Lewis is the band's star, writing and singing the lead on most songs. The emo-glam former child actor is often photographed with a grave expression on her face, which fits her musical material: ill-fated love affairs, apathy and sex for money, among other things. Her clear-as-a-bell voice works well with the array of styles the band explores.Lewis was joined by bassist Pierre de Reeder, drummer Jason Boesel, and guitarist Blake Sennett, who, like Lewis, spent time on side projects after the 2004 Rilo Kiley release 'More Adventurous.' (Sennett released an album with his band, The Elected; Lewis released a widely acclaimed debut solo album, 'Rabbit Fur Coat.'

Back together again, the group made 'Under the Blacklight,' which was released last month and includes such songs as the infectious disco 'Breakin' Up,' alt-rock 'Moneymaker' and alt-country '15.' While the band performed most of the songs on the album yesterday, the second of two consecutive sold-out shows at the venue, it did not play the title song. The song's intro music came on at one point, but it was a fake-out - the band instead played the new peppy runaway-bride number 'Silver Lining.' Wearing a short, sparkly dress with a bow at her decolletage, Lewis matched a sparkly, champagne-colored backdrop on stage.

(The front of the stage was lit with - guess what? - black light, or something like it.) Also onstage were two female singer-musicians who harmonized and played various instruments. The set started with 'It's a Hit,' a song from 'More Adventurous.' Lewis sang with abandon at the end, showing the strength of a voice that is more often sweet and measured.Technical problems plagued the first half of the show, occasionally affecting the group's balance and causing the distinctive guitar line on 'Portions for Foxes' to disappear. Still, the song was performed with energy and sass, unlike 'Breakin' Up,' which was sluggish.' Breakin' Up,' introduced by Sennett as a dance song, was too slow from the start, without the gospel accompaniment heard on the album version. That slow, 'Breakin' Up' is simplified, its lyrics more obviously a teen-love metaphor in which a relationship and cell phone are both on the fritz.Other songs enjoyed a better delivery, including 'Paint's Peeling' from 'The Execution of All Things'(2002) and 'Wires and Waves' from 'Take-Offs and Landings' (2001). 'A Man/Me/Then Jim,' another song from 'More Adventurous,' made good use of bongos and a trumpet. One of the highlights of the show was 'Ripchord,' which Sennett performs mostly on his own on ukelele.

Crisp and infused with energy, the song was much better than its more restrained album counterpart. 'With Arms Outstretched,' from 'The Execution of All Things,' followed, and showcased Lewis at her vocal best. The band played two songs from its members' solo projects: 'Greetings in Braille' from 'Me First,' one of Sennett's band's albums, and 'Rise Up With Fists' from 'Rabbit Fur Coat.' The show, which began with sets by the Nebraska-based indie band Art in Manila and singer-songwriter Jonathan Rice, closed with two encores. One was 'Give a Little Love,' the last track on 'Under the Blacklight,' which Lewis said she wrote for Sennett. The other was 'Does He Love You?'

The melodic story of a love triangle from 'More Adventurous.' As they had during many parts of the show, the fans sang along.
